First off, I want to congratulate Craig Carton and Boomer Esiason on their “Boomer and Carton” WFAN morning show’s one year Anniversary today. It is a great achievement in the popular and competitive New York morning show market.
I have been a caller on numerous occasions talking about all New York based sports issues and telling some great stories. On one occasion early in the 2008 baseball season, Boomer and Carton were discussing the online ticket prices to the September 21st game at new/old Yankee Stadium.
I called in and relayed the story how my father and I went to the last game at OLD Yankee Stadium back in 1973. My father, an exterminator by profession, did a termite job for Phil Rizzuto, who in addition to regular payment, gave my dad four tickets to that final game. Late in the game, I witnessed fans pulling and chopping apart chairs. After the final out, fans streamed onto the field and my first inclination was to get 2nd base. I was pushed aside by a police officer, who proceeded to take the base for himself. While not getting the bag, I did tear apart a portion of the infield, planted the grass in my own front yard where it still exists today.
Times were different in 1973, and as a ten year old kid I was running around the Bronx (albeit Yankee Stadiums hallowed grounds) with my buddy as our fathers were across the street waiting.
Boomer and Carton loved the story, asked if we still had the ticket stubs (we do) and couldn’t believe how the fans reacted with little hatchet’s chopping apart the old wooden chairs. I explained that the metal detectors probably weren’t installed yet.
I also called in one time when Bobby Murcer was diagnosed with his illness and explained how Bobby Murcer was a Yankee for life because he gave up his roster spot for Don Mattingly - something those two “sports experts” did not know at the time.
I called the show several weeks ago after Manny Ramirez was traded to the Dodgers. Many Met fans wanted Manny and were upset that Omar Minaya did not try to obtain the dreadlocked slugger.
I got through to the show and explained my reasoning was that the Mets were unwilling to trade their top guys in Fernando Martinez, Jonathan Niese, Eddie Kunz and Bobby Parnell and that the “second tier” prospects of Nick Evans, Danny Murphy and Mike Carp did not excite the Pirates, who wanted young players inthe three way trade.
Carton asked me how I knew that these four guys were not wanted by other teams and I said that their were no reports out there that any other teams were interested in these guys, and the general consensus was they were not as talented. (We have since been proven wrong thus far on Murphy and Evans, no?)
Carton said that he was going to put me on hold, get my address and send me $20 in singles because I “needed to get my nose out of Baseball America, get out in the real world and get myself a woman.” The $20 was for a strip club so I can “get some.” As Boomer (and I assume mostly everyone listening) started laughing, I was cut off. I thought the entertainment part was very funny and I started to receive text messages and phone calls from friends who were listening.
It was very good radio.
I called back and got through again, explaing to the producer who I was (its always Joe from Point Pleasant on WFAN and ESPN 1050), and wanted to give him my address for the cash. I also explained that a $20 bill would suffice, as I do very well in the woman department. The producer took my name and adress and said he would give it to Craig.
I still have not received my $20 and wondered why it has taken so long. Cliff Clavin (from Cheers) nor Newman (from Seinfeld) are not my mailmen and the $20 bill should have been delivered by now.
I think Craig Carton just did not send the money and renegged on his word.
