David Robertson Stepping Up His Game
This past December I wrote a piece about the Robertson brothers, David of the Yankees and Connor of the Mets. With the state of the bullpen’s for both New York teams, I had written that both Robertson’s could very well be playing baseball in April 2009 in New York.
Little did I realize that the game would not be played in New York City, but in Buffalo, NY!
Don’t the Yankees and Mets front offices know that the brothers would be able to save tons of apartment rental dollars if both were in the Major Leagues?
Actually, both brothers are pitching like they should be in the Major Leagues. Connor has been consistent in his couple of AAA appearances while David has been downright dominant. His job today included three innings of one hit, one walk baseball, striking out seven Buffalo hitters. Robertson threw 47 pitches in relief of Kei Igawa, who got the win today despite giving up three home runs.
I find it interesting that Robertson was allowed to throw three innings the day after Phil Coke and Jose Veras each had their second bad relief appearances of this short season.
Since the beginning of time, or just a few hundred million years later, I have always liked David Robertson. His one negative has always been his bouts with wildness, but with only one walk in 5 innings thus far, his control issues have appeared to be resolved.
He should have been with the Yankees right out of spring training, and along with Mark Melancon both should be a big part of the 2009 Yankee bullpen. Along with Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy and Dellin Betances, Robertson and Melancon were two more picks from the 2006 Brian Cashman/Damon Oppenheimer draft.
