Juan Miranda Called up Today and Yanks Win!
Simply amazing! If he was only kept on the opening day roster......
It was the logical move as Miranda is already on the 40 man roster and is really stinging the ball thus far in 2009. David Robertson, who still has options, was sent down and must stay in Triple A for at least 10 days until he can be recalled. Jose Veras is out of options and the Yankees didn't want to send him down and risk him being claimed by another team.
As I have pointed out yesterday, (check out the smiley face) despite a decent 2008 Veras is not really that good of a pitcher, never having a good season in the minors or majors before 2008.
With Hideki Matsui's continuing knee problems and Xavier Nady out indefinitely, Miranda has an opportunity to play. And if he plays agsisnt RHP, he will perform. He will be the primary LH off the bench but should be given a shot to DH against some righties. He crushes RH pitching to the tune of an .833 OPS (on base plus slugging percentage) last season in Triple A.
Although he has struggled agasint left handed pitchers, Miranda has performed well so far this season in Scranton, hitting .444 (4 for 9) with a homer. But Miranda should hit strictly against RHP only for now.
Matsui's knee issues will be around the entire season and by the end of the year, Matusi will not even be a factor with the Yankees and Miranda will get plenty of reps this season and next.
