Humberto Sanchez Should be Released from 40 man roster and other tidbits

The list of Yankees Extended Spring Training pitchers was released yesterday. These are guys who are either injured, coming off a surgery or still under Yankees control and there is just no room for him to pitch.

As far as the other extended spring training pitchers go:

1) Tim Norton - coming off rotator cuff surgery in April 2007 and is a beast with a nasty, Bob Gibson-like mound attitude. He wants to dominate every hitter. If healthy, he could be a good one.

2) Adam Olbrychowski - saw him with Charleston last season. He is nothing special and can't consistently throw strikes. Other pitchers like Ryan Pope and Ryan Zink are way better (especially Zink) with more upside. He has no spot on Tampa's or Charleston's roster. He should be released soon. UPDATE (5/2/09): Olbry is assigned to High A Tampa, and actually has done quite well although he still offers up the free passes (3 in 4.1 innings).

Humberto Sanchez should also be released. Who cares anymore about him? This business is about performance and health. If you are performing, you will get a shot. If you aren't performing, but healthy, you still might get a chance if you have potential and a live arm.

But, when you are not performing and are constantly hurt - no shot.

There are too many good young arms in the system to keep worrying about an overweight, underperforming guy like Sanchez.

The Yanks need to add a few pitchers such as Melancon and Kontos during or after this season to the 40 man or risk losing them.

You can afford to lose Sanchez and Garcia.
